A Pop Music Festival to Remember

San Diego South Chapter celebrated Spring 2017 with a bang! Last April 29, twenty-nine students from seven chapter member teachers masterfully played with a professional band. The morning rehearsals provided a unique experience for the students to be the band leader and learn to direct “their band”. Two afternoon recitals showcased their piano and vocal performances ranging from Broadway musicals, Disney songs, jazz, movie themes, current pop hits and pop standards. All participating teachers and teacher volunteers came out to lend their time and effort: Mark Asuncion for emceeing and overseeing student check-ins, Festival Chairs Sally Sumner and Graziel Dulay, band members Steven Barta (guitars), Matthew Lutack (drums), and Jim Albarella (bass), Fresas Balistreri (Adjudicator), Chu-ying Hung and Tim Sumner for assisting the students, Jennifer Rodriguez for video documentation, Alex Quiman for photography, and Chapter President Rowena Asuncion for overseeing the whole project. Congratulations to the following students who were chosen as Adjudicator’s Pick: pianistsTiffany Phan ( Mia and Sebastian’s Theme from “La la Land”), Hubert Phan (See You Again), Jaleal Tagulinao (Viva La Vida), Isabella Howell (Water Under the Bridge), Alexandra Orczyk (Colors of the Wind); and vocalists Erin Grace Tuscano (I Enjoy Being a Girl from The Flower Drum Song) and Mikala Villanueva (The Simple Joys of Maidenhood). They received medals for their outstanding performances. All students received a certificate of achievement award, and especially made CAPMT souvenir bags, pencils and luggage tags.

The Parish Hall of St. Peter’s Episcopalian Church in Del Mar, CA provided a wonderful venue to this fun event, with its accessibility, superb acoustics, a 9 ft Baldwin piano and colorful spring decorations inside and outside the hall! Students, teachers, family members and guests had fun posing in the photo booth during rehearsals and after the recitals!
