October to Remember: A Festival, Two Competitions, and an Award

QUESTION: How do you fit three groups of music students in one weekend? Well, have them perform in three well-applauded and very successful programs, of course!

Saturday, October 27. Mission: Young Artists Competition. Venue. Point Loma/Hervey Branch Library. Sixty-five (65) students representing 9 teachers/studios competed and performed to vie for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards before a panel of 2 adjudicators. In front of a captive audience, solid performances were delivered on these instruments: piano, strings, viola, bass, cello, alto saxophone, and guzheng. Students played either as soloists, duets, trios, quartets, and as members of 3 orchestras! Students received trophies, cash award (1st prize), ribbons (1st, 2nd, 3rd, as determined by adjudicators), certificates with ratings ( Excellent, Superior, Unanimous Superior), and of course, treat bags for everyone. Point Loma/Hervey Branch Library was overflowing with music students and all performances were open to the public. Verdict: Mission accomplished!

Saturday, October 27. Mission: Concerto Competition. Eleven (11) highly competitive students played their hearts away to outperform each other by age-category as they gave their powerful renditions of classical masterpieces like Camille Saint-Saens’ Concerto no.1 in A minor, 1st mvt. (cello), Boccherini’s Concerto in B flat Major, 2nd mvt. (cello), and (our very own local composer) Lu-Yan Gou’s Concerto no.1 in C major, 3rd mvt. (bass). Verdict: Mission Accomplished!

Flashback:

Several teachers from our chapter attended CAPMT 50th Anniversary State Conference last October 19-20, 2018 at Torrance Marriott (Redondo Beach). The highlight for us is receiving our award as the CAPMT Chapter of the Year for 2018! Two days of very informative lecture, presentations, masterclasses, recitals, and a gala awards banquet energized us to work further for a better and bigger San Diego South Chapter!

A Day to Remember: 2018 POP Music Festival

The 3rd Annual Spring Pop Music Festival was another successful event hosted by CAPMT 1 SDSC on May 19, 2018 at Chula Vista Library Performance Hall, 365 F. St. Chula Vista, CA.

Twenty-eight music students (piano, voice, violin) representing five teachers of SDSC performed with The Royer’s Destroyers Band, a local professional band in San Diego. Repertoire ranged from standard classics, movie and Disney themes, Broadway musicals, jazz, and rags. It was a fun-filled music festival, with students practicing with the band in the morning and then leading and directing the band in their afternoon performance! The ninety-three audience members (family members and the general public) actively participated by filling up personalized compliment cards for their favorite student players. Performers also received participation medals and certificates to commemorate the event. Selected players, Mia and Anya Davis, and Brendon Sheen Ligason were invited to perform at the Honors Recital and Gala scheduled on June 9, 2018.

2017 Fall Events

This fall has been an impressive musical season for CAPMT San Diego South Chapter.

October 28, 2017, was a fun-filled day for our Halloween-themed MTNA Studio Festival Program where several teachers joined forces to feature some of their students. Instead of an adjudicator, the audience served as friendly critics by writing their observations and thoughts in complimentary cards!  The captive audience was surely engaged during all performances and students had a blast reading their complimentary cards after the event. Each went home with a goody bag and a commemorative medal to mark the afternoon occasion. Six piano teachers from the chapter had 24 students perform in the packed community room of Carmel Valley Library.

The following day, October 29, 2017, set a serious tone to our highly-motivated and competitive music students as they vied to win prizes and awards in the 1st San Diego South Chapter Concerto Competition and Young Artists Competition. Serra Mesa-Kearny Mesa Library served as the venue for this year’s competitions. (2017 Concerto Competition Results YOUNG ARTISTS COMPETITION 2017 RESULTS with REPERTOIRE LIST.)

Thirteen string students (violin, viola, cello) vied for 1st Place in the Concerto Competition, Category A-D. This was followed by the Young Artists Competition, piano and string divisions. Overall, YAC had 35 entries from 66 participating students. All came prepared to impress!  Students performed solos, duets, ensemble,  as well as orchestra selections. Fresas Flores Balistreri served as adjudicator. Teachers and volunteers were on hand to run the events smoothly. Many thanks to event chair Lu-Yan Guo, events coordinator, and chapter president Rowena Asuncion, teachers Fei-Fei Soong, Natsuko Jones, Sally Sumner and Timothy Sumner, and volunteer Alex Quiman for all their hard work. We surely need a bigger venue for next year’s fall competitions!

November 18, 2017,  was set aside for Ensemble and Piano Auditions, a CAPMT state event. Four teams participated in the ensemble auditions and twelve soloists did their best to score a “5” in the piano auditions. Greene Music was the perfect venue for the afternoon event. Volunteers Samuel Bautista, Alex Quiman and Koni Ruiz helped during the event. Students received their certificate from CAPMT and a participation trophy from the chapter. Students who got “5” will be invited to perform on February 17, 2018, for the CAPMT Southern Festival to be held at LA Harbor College.

Additionally, top-performing and selected students from all these fall events will be invited to perform in the Honors Recital and Gala on June 9, 2018.

CAPMT San Diego South Chapter is surely committed to pursuing its goal to bring music and excellence in the San Diego community. We look forward to a more musical 2018!
