October to Remember: A Festival, Two Competitions, and an Award

QUESTION: How do you fit three groups of music students in one weekend? Well, have them perform in three well-applauded and very successful programs, of course!

Saturday, October 27. Mission: Young Artists Competition. Venue. Point Loma/Hervey Branch Library. Sixty-five (65) students representing 9 teachers/studios competed and performed to vie for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards before a panel of 2 adjudicators. In front of a captive audience, solid performances were delivered on these instruments: piano, strings, viola, bass, cello, alto saxophone, and guzheng. Students played either as soloists, duets, trios, quartets, and as members of 3 orchestras! Students received trophies, cash award (1st prize), ribbons (1st, 2nd, 3rd, as determined by adjudicators), certificates with ratings ( Excellent, Superior, Unanimous Superior), and of course, treat bags for everyone. Point Loma/Hervey Branch Library was overflowing with music students and all performances were open to the public. Verdict: Mission accomplished!

Saturday, October 27. Mission: Concerto Competition. Eleven (11) highly competitive students played their hearts away to outperform each other by age-category as they gave their powerful renditions of classical masterpieces like Camille Saint-Saens’ Concerto no.1 in A minor, 1st mvt. (cello), Boccherini’s Concerto in B flat Major, 2nd mvt. (cello), and (our very own local composer) Lu-Yan Gou’s Concerto no.1 in C major, 3rd mvt. (bass). Verdict: Mission Accomplished!

Flashback:

Several teachers from our chapter attended CAPMT 50th Anniversary State Conference last October 19-20, 2018 at Torrance Marriott (Redondo Beach). The highlight for us is receiving our award as the CAPMT Chapter of the Year for 2018! Two days of very informative lecture, presentations, masterclasses, recitals, and a gala awards banquet energized us to work further for a better and bigger San Diego South Chapter!

Thank you for all your support.
